Adjusting to life after your child has finished cancer treatment
Finishing cancer treatment is a milestone that many young people and their families typically look forward to and celebrate. However, many parents have told us that life after their child's cancer is more complicated than simply returning ‘back to normal’. Many aspects of life may have changed due to the cancer experience (eg, relationships with friends and family, family and work routines), and new stresses can also come up (eg, worrying about your child's future, cancer recurrence, etc). Additionally, being a parent of a young person who has had cancer can be a very isolating experience, due to the small numbers who are diagnosed with cancer every year.
What does this study aim to achieve?
The Cascade study aims to evaluate a new service, designed to support parents after their child finishes cancer treatment. Cascade involves four, weekly, group-based sessions, that are delivered using internet-based videoconferencing (like SkypeTM). The point of Cascade is to provide parents with a place to discuss some of their experiences of their child finishing treatment, and discuss ways to cope with the unique challenges that can come up.
Ultimately, we hope to use the results of the Cascade study to determine what kind of psychosocial support is the most useful for parents of young people who have recently finished cancer treatment. We hope to use this information to ensure that parents of the next generation of young people with cancer are supported the best way possible after cancer treatment.
