patient Education and cognition |
The patient education and cognition team aims to improve the educational and social trajectories of young people affected by cancer through research and translation of knowledge into supportive resources. Our current studies include Ready Steady School, Missing School and Hospital School studies.
Ready Steady School is developing a school re-entry program for survivors of childhood cancer, their families and teachers, to ensure their successful transition into school after treatment. The Missing School study is working with Missing School to evaluate their telepresence robot program, helping keep seriously sick kids connected to their school. The Hospital School study is working with Sydney Children's Hospital School to evaluate their health and education support plans.
Our past studies include EduSwell, EdMed and Reconnect. The EduSwell study explores the school factors that promote student wellbeing, and its sister study EdMed equips teachers with the skills needed to support children with chronic illness in the classroom. The Reconnect study explores the social functioning of childhood cancer survivors.

Research studies
The Ready, Steady, School study aims to develop a school re-entry program for survivors of childhood cancer, their families and education professionals, to ensure the successful transition into school after cancer treatment.
The Reconnect study aims to discover what factors might predict social difficulties after childhood cancer, as well as identify what specific social skills may be impacted by a diagnosis of childhood cancer.
The Missing School Study is a collaboration between researchers at the Behavioral Sciences Unit and Missing School. The Missing School Study is evaluating telepresence robots, to see what is working well with the robots, and what could be improved.
The Hospital School study is aiming to evaluate the coordinated health and education support plans that are part of the support children receive from the Hospital School. This study will aim to improve these plans to better assist children with serious illness or injury and their families at every stage in their education.
SOCIAL AYA aims to explore the social experiences of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer. We want to better understand how going through cancer treatment affects young people’s social wellbeing and how they feel about themselves. This research also aims to identify young people who might be struggling socially, and to develop better ways for their healthcare providers to help and support them.
