One in eight Australian children have a serious or chronic health condition, needing hospitalisation or long-term healthcare.
Chronic and/or serious disease in children can have long lasting impacts, not only on the patient but also on the family unit.
It is our mandate to lead research which enables health professionals and the hospital system to better support children and their families from the diagnosis of a serious or chronic condition through to survivorship or bereavement.

Key Research Areas
PRECISION MEDICINE AND GENOMICS
The Precision Medicine and Genomics team is investigating the psychological impact of genetic testing in childhood and working towards the ethical implementation of new technologies and experimental therapies into the cancer clinic. MENTAL HEALTH & RELATIONSHIPS
In the Mental Health and Relationships team, we acknowledge that child chronic illness has a profound effect on each family member individually, as well as the family unit as a whole.
HEALTH SYSTEMS & SURVIVORSHIP
The Health Systems and Survivorship Team is dedicated to advancing the wellbeing of childhood cancer survivors and children living with chronic or complex illnesses. Our research explores the psychosocial impact of survivorship, aiming to develop innovative interventions that address both psychological and physical challenges while preventing the emergence, or minimising the impact of new late effects. In addition, our team focuses on transforming health systems by designing and evaluating new models of care. These models aim to optimise the treatment journey, improve access to high-quality follow-up care, and enhance outcomes for patients and their families. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical healthcare delivery, we strive to create sustainable, patient-centred solutions that benefit individuals and the broader healthcare system alike. PATIENT EDUCATION & COGNITION
Our patient education and cognition team aims to improve the educational and social trajectories of young people affected by cancer through research and translation of knowledge into supportive resources. |
